The Bullmastiff characteristics are the best way of knowing the dog or pup before you buy them. He belongs to the working group of dogs and you can find them with breeders as well as dog rescue kennels. It is always a better option to pick up pups than full grown dogs. The Bullmastiff characteristics that you should look out for include:

General Appearance The bullmastiffs are powerful dogs and show great alertness, strength, and endurance. Even though they are heavy dogs, they are quite active. The Bullmastiff is 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog and was primarily bred by gamekeepers to provide protection from poaching.

Size and Proportion The size of adult dogs can vary from 25 to 27 inches and they will weigh 110 to 130 pounds. The female dogs or bitches can grow up to 24 to 26 inches in height and weigh 100 to 120 pounds. He will have a square appearance because the length measured from his tip of breastbone to his rear of the thigh will exceed his height from withers by a small difference.

Head Bullmastiffs are alert and intelligent dogs. Their eyes are medium sized and dark while the ears will be almost V-shaped. Their skull is large compared to several other dog breeds and will display a fair amount of wrinkles especially when they are alert. The cheeks are broad and well developed but the forehead is flat.

Body, Neck, and Topline The neck of Bullmastiffs is of moderate length and is slightly arched. The neck is muscular and its equal to the circumference is that of the skull. If you are picking up a grown Bullmastiff or even pups, check for the topline. The topline should ideally be straight and at the same level as that between the withers and the loin. The body will be compact while the chest should be wide and deep. The back of the dog will be short and these characteristics give him a look of a well balanced dog.

Forequarters The shoulders of all Bullmastiffs are muscular and slope down gently. The forelegs are straight, set well apart, and well boned. The Pasterns are also straight while their feet are of medium size and have round toes that are well arched too. The pads of their feet are thick and the nails are black.

Hindquarters This is a broad and muscular dog that has a well developed 2nd thigh, which gives him extra power.

Coat The coat of Bullmastiffs is short and dense and provides ample weather protection.

Colour He will have a red, fawn, or brindle colour and some might even have small white spots on their chest. Normally, a Bullmastiff with a white marking is treated as a fault.

Gait The gait of the Bullmastiff is smooth, free, and powerful.

Temperament The Bullmastiffs are famous for their fearlessness and confidence but at the same time one of the greatest Bullmastiff characteristics is that they are docile. He is a smart dog with enough intelligence and willingness to make him one of the most dependable family dogs and protective companions ever!
